R391 compound is a non-hardening plastic weatherproof sealant which can be applied to protect electrical connections from moisture and corrosive vapours. The compound has the consistency of a putty and good insulation properties, being rated at 1000V.
The compound may be moulded around terminals and connections or used to mechanically seal any form of enclosure, conduit box or cable gland. Being soft enough to mould around intricate contours or pressed into fine cavities, it has the ability to both resist the dislodging effects of vibration and prevent moisture creepage along any interface.
R391 does not harden on exposure to air or sunlight, it does not shrink, crack or peel and although sunlight may cause a slight skin hardening, this does not affect the mass annd can be removed by working in the hand. It is ideal for use in maintenance purposes where cables may be removed or replaced at regular intervals.
The compound material does not emit toxic fumes even if overheated and is harmless to the hands or environment. It resists water permeation and is unaffected by dilute acids and alkalis in liquid or vapour form. It has no deleterious effects on metals, plastic, natural or synthetic rubber, PVC or other polymeric cable insulation, but is not resistant to oils, aromatics or aliphatic hydro carbons.
